How to work with a Performance Dietitians for FREE!

Anna Turner MS, RD, CSSD

What can you learn from a sports dietitian:

A sports dietitian is a specialized nutrition expert who helps athletes and active individuals optimize their diet to improve performance, recovery, and overall health. Here’s what you can learn from a sports dietitian:

1. Personalized Nutrition Planning

  • Tailoring your macronutrient (carbs, protein, fat) and micronutrient (vitamins, minerals) intake to meet your specific training goals, body composition, and sport requirements. Example: some sports need MORE carbs than others. Sports that contain a lot of sprinting = soccer!

  • Creating meal and snack plans that support training schedules, competitions, and recovery.

2. Pre-Workout and Post-Workout Nutrition

  • Understanding what to eat before and after workouts or competitions to maximize energy, endurance, and recovery.

  • Learning about timing of meals and hydration for optimal performance.

3. Hydration Strategies

  • Developing personalized hydration plans that consider sweat rate, climate, and sport intensity.

  • Managing electrolytes and preventing dehydration or overhydration.

4. Supplements

  • Evaluating the need for supplements like protein powders, creatine, or vitamins.

  • Identifying safe and effective supplements, and avoiding banned or unnecessary substances.

5. Injury Recovery Nutrition

  • Learning how to eat to support tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and maintain muscle mass during injury recovery.

6. Weight Management

  • Managing weight safely and effectively, whether the goal is to lose fat, gain muscle, or maintain weight for competition.

7. Performance Issues

  • Addressing fatigue, low energy availability, gastrointestinal distress, or poor recovery through diet.

8. Disordered Eating and RED-S

  • Recognizing and addressing signs of disordered eating or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) with a focus on health and sustainable performance.

9. Meal Planning and Cooking

  • Developing practical skills for grocery shopping, meal prep, and choosing performance-enhancing foods when eating out or traveling.

10. Education and Behavior Change

  • Understanding the science behind nutrition and how to make long-term changes that support both performance and overall well-being.
